Technology in Practice: Upsides, Downsides and Best Practices

On January 26, 20201, COAFCC hosted a panel presentation focused on technology in the practice of family law. Panelists included Jennifer Rice, JD, Magistrate Dina Christiansen, and Julie Van Heyningen, Psy.D. Technology support for this presentation was provided by OurFamilyWizard.

Presentation Overview

The panel discussed tips and best practices for using remote technology in this time of COVID. Ms. Rice addressed challenges and best practices for lawyers, Magistrate Christiansen addressed best practices from the bench, and Dr. Van Heyningen addressed best practices for telehealth and remote evaluations.

Jennifer Rice, JD

Panelists

Jennifer Rice, J.D.

Jennifer L. Rice received her J.D. from the University of South Carolina. Her practice at Rice Law Office. P.C. focuses on family law and adoptions.  Jennifer is a trained mediator and practices with Creative Resolutions Mediation.  She currently serves as a representative from the Larimer County Bar Association to the Board of Governors for the Colorado Bar Association and is a member of the Eighth Judicial District Domestic Relations Best Practices Committee. She is a former Commissioner of the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Eighth Judicial District and is a past president of the Larimer County Bar Association.

 
Magistrate Dina Christiansen

Magistrate Dina Christiansen

Ms. Christiansen received her law degree from the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and her undergraduate degree from the University of Utah.  She began her law practice in Greeley, Colorado and later became a partner with the law firm of Wabeke, Brummet, Johnson & Christiansen, where her practice focused mainly on domestic relations law.  Ms. Christiansen has largely practiced in the domestic relations area in the last twelve years, most recently with her firm of The Christiansen Law Firm LLC in Fort Collins.  Ms. Christiansen was selected at Magistrate for the 8th Judicial District on September 16, 2019 and has the pre-decree domestic relations docket. 

 
Julie Van Heyningen, Psy.D.

Julie Van Heyningen, Psy.D.

Julie Van Heyningen, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Littleton, Colorado.  Her practice is primarily dedicated to high conflict divorce work including Parental Responsibility Evaluations, conducting psychological evaluations and consulting with parents and professionals in these areas.  In addition, she serves as an individual therapist to adults and adolescents, specializing in the areas of high conflict divorce, parenting, trauma, depression, and anxiety.  She is trained in EMDR and Internal Family Systems.  Dr. Van Heyningen has written articles and presented at conferences in the area of high conflict divorce.  She is the former President for the Metro Denver Interdisciplinary Committee and is a former member (and Chairperson) for the Colorado Psychological Association’s Ethics Committee.
